For over 20 years, MP Brandon Pillay has had a vision to build infrastructure that would cater to the needs of his community in Bayview, Chatsworth, south of Durban. Pillay, who founded the Bayview Flats Residents Association in 1999, with the guidance of the late Professor Fatima Meer, has been serving the Bayview community ever since. The philanthropist’s dreams are set to be realised as construction of the Ubuntu Bayview Community Centre begins.

Speaking at a sod-turning ceremony on 20 February 2023, Pillay reflected fondly on his first meeting with Sibaya Community Trust founder and chairperson Vivian Reddy. He said that Reddy, who has since become his role model and mentor, uttered words that have always stood out for him: “If you can dream, it you can achieve it.”

Sibaya Community Trust is investing over R4 million in building the centre, which will support community development.

“Today is indeed a special day. The community waited for this project for many years, and finally, their dream is materialising with help from the Sibaya Community Trust. This legacy project will offer many benefits to the locals in Bayview and surrounding areas.” Vivian Reddy

“I’m delighted that this project will enable initiatives such as a daily soup kitchen, a medical camp, an advice desk for young people, the elderly and the vulnerable as well as serve as a hub for programmes on Gender-Based Violence (GBV),” said Reddy.

Reddy added that he had been involved with helping develop the Bayview community since 1999, supporting many programmes over the years. He was especially heartened by the fact there would be a much-needed White Door Centre of Hope and Women’s Shelter constructed as part of the project. GBV remains a problem in many communities.

“My tribute goes to Brandon Pillay. His passion and dedication since the age of 17 has shaped the future for Bayview residents. It is through his perseverance that we stand here today to make miracles happen.”

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Social Development Nonhlanhla Khoza said she was delighted to learn that Sibaya Community Trust had invested over R250 million in social upliftment. She called Reddy “the father of KwaZulu-Natal” for his philanthropic efforts to support the poorest of the poor.

Khoza added that people like Reddy helped ease the suffering of the vulnerable. She said he had given the best gift possible to the Bayview community.

The building project will start in the next few weeks, and is expected to be completed by July.
