The Wild Coast Sun has once again shown its commitment to sports development in the Eastern Cape, partnering with the Mzamba Sports Association to host a sports tournament for soccer and netball teams from surrounding rural communities.
The teams that competed all operate with limited resources and no funding. Each team that participated in the tournament received bibs, markers and a ball to assist them at training. The winners received a floating trophy, gold medals, Adidas kit with goal keeper gloves, second and third place also got a full kit, medals and gloves.
“For centuries, sport has been a great leveller and a platform for uniting people of all races and creeds. It is for this reason at the Wild Coast Sun so enthusiastically supports the cultivation of a passionate sporting culture and the development of sport in the Eastern Cape. We do this by contributing to the development of local sports clubs, through donations of kits and other necessities, and by providing opportunities for resource-constrained teams to compete against one another in tournaments. It is heartening to be part of projects such as this.”Mawande Genu, PR Co-ordinator at Wild Coast Sun.
Present at the tournament were Doctor Khumalo, Neil Tovey and Chief Baleni. The Player of the Tournament, Skhumbuzo Xolo will get a chance to try out for AmaZulu Football Club. Neil and Doctor also identified three players that they promised to introduce to soccer academies. They included Simphiwe Shozi, Mzolisi Mzimbomvu and Mazwi Mgwijazwe.
Sixteen soccer teams participated in the tournament, with Spears FC crowned Champions, Try Luckies FC coming second and Sinenkani FC coming third for bronze. Eight netball teams participated in the tournament, with Spears Netball Team taking top honours.
