Over 40% of eligible spend for the 2018 Nedbank Golf Challenge went to 20 local black majority owned companies.
Local procurement went to 1st time participating companies, 11 from the neighbouring communities.
The Nedbank Golf Challenge (NGC) is not only Sun City’s largest and most high profile event of the year but it is also a major vending opportunity for many South African small and medium enterprises.
2018 was a year that Sun City Resort set out to fulfill one of its primary socio-economic objectives: A procurement drive to attract local businesses to provide services to NGC tournament, for the first time in the history of the tournament.
“The rationale is simple. This is the community we operate in and we must all benefit from this annual golf pilgrimage that has gained world recognition,” says Raul de Lima, Resort General Manager at Sun City.
Sun City procurement teams had set high targets at 40% for local business. The challenge however, was the resort did not have an extensive local supplier list. A deliberate approach to inform and encourage local businesses to take up the opportunity was implemented. The net was thrown wide to attract high intensity services such as construction, electricity generation and security as well as hospitality support services such as catering appliances, food delivery and cleaning services. The criteria was simple. All companies had to be BBBEE level 1-2 and majority black owned.
Sun City’s efforts and confidence in local companies paid-off and the Resort surpassed its Preferential Local Procurement target, achieving 44% local procumbent for NGC 2018. The majority of the companies were from the neighbouring communities of Ledig, Mogwase, Moruleng including broader areas of the greater Bojanala District such as Tlhabane, Phokeng, Rustenburg and Brits (Madibeng). The preferential local procurement was to the total value of R 7, 45 mil with almost 70% (R 5, 2 mil) going to companies based in Sun City’s neighbouring communities. The remaining R2, 25 mil went to companies in the broader region providing services such as paving, plumbing, TV installation, electrical, security, bus hire, consumables and catering appliances.
“What we have achieved during NGC 2018 indicates what is possible in local procurement when businesses go the extra mile to attract local companies to opportunities. And it gave us great pride that the service provided by companies of Moses Kotane Local Municipality was just as professional as services provided by any other company over the years,” concludes de Lima.
A total number of 1 459 people from the neighbouring municipalities were employed during the 2018 Nedbank Golf Challenge.
