Sun International scoops reporting award

JSE-listed Sun International has won an award from the Chartered Governance Institute of Southern Africa for its Integrated Reporting.

Sun International was a joint winner, along with Royal Bafokeng Platinum in the Small Cap category at the 2020 CGISA Integrated Reporting Awards. The company has seen its corporate reporting evolving significantly in recent years.

“At the outset, Sun International produced separate and standalone report sections in their annual report that focused on financial, governance and sustainability aspects with limited integration,” explains Jannette Horn, head of Sustainability at Sun International. “Over the years and with the guidance of the International Integrated Reporting Framework, among others, the group refined the way we report on all aspects of the business.”

Horn says the award affirms the fact that the information Sun International is publishing in the public domain is accurate, transparent, and relevant to stakeholders.

"Producing an award-winning integrated annual report provides our stakeholders, particularly our shareholders, with the assurance that Sun International has a clear business strategy that is driven by a committed leadership team."

The group’s integrated report is one of its most important stakeholder communication methods, she says, which is why it’s imperative that the business reports on past performance as well as future business strategies to give stakeholders an indication of what the company is doing to improve its products and services and illustrate how it contributes to the broader South African economy.

“Producing an award-winning integrated annual report provides our stakeholders, particularly our shareholders, with the assurance that Sun International has a clear business strategy that is driven by a committed leadership team. In addition, this award demonstrates the group’s commitment to transparency and accountability. Furthermore it provides an indication of how we compare against our peers, competitors and market indexes,” she says, adding that the detailed feedback report from the panel of judges is an important indication of how the business can continue to enhance its reporting process.

The Integrated Reporting Awards strives to improve standards of reporting, a critical element of good governance, through providing valuable feedback on company’s integrated reports. The Chartered Governance Institute of Southern Africa has hosted the reporting awards since 1956 and partnered with the JSE, as co-hosts for over 20 years. PricewaterhouseCoopers oversees the adjudication.
