History of the Sun Star

Part sculpture, part allegory, the 24m-high Sun Star art installation, designed by Cape Town artist Christopher Swift, embodies South Africa’s history and future in an interactive display of rebirth, reconciliation and hope.

Swift, the founder of the Robben Island Art Company & Trust (RIACT), used reclaimed fencing from Robben Island – the famous site of Nelson Mandela’s final years of incarceration – to construct the sculpture as a project for Cape Town: World Design Capital 2014.

After its debut on Cape Town’s iconic Signal Hill, the Sun Star was moved to its permanent home at Sun City, where it continues to shine as a reminder that, more than 20 years into our new democracy, South Africa’s future is brighter than ever.

Wander through the Welcome Centre and relive the iconic moments that forged the New South Africa. Marvel at the repurposed fencing, which once enforced imprisonment but now criss-crosses dramatically against the horizon to form an inspirational eight-pointed star. Learn about the sustainability of the installation, from its minimal-impact foundation to low-energy lighting. Be inspired by its symbolism and message, and leave with a renewed sense of hope.
