Boardwalk and its partners have donated WiFi, printing, and resources to the fabled New Brighton Library, enhancing community learning and connectivity.
The New Brighton Library in Ibhayi, a longstanding hub for learning and community gathering in the Eastern Cape’s largest township, now offers free, stable public internet to residents, thanks to a generous partnership led by the Boardwalk Hotel and Casino. This initiative, backed by nearly R150 000 in funding, promises transformative benefits for the community, bringing enhanced access to information, job opportunities, and essential digital tools.
This support package from Boardwalk and its suppliers includes 12 months of telecommunication costs and the installation of a public printer, making access to digital resources even more convenient. Alongside the tech upgrades, young learners can enjoy a revamped children’s reading corner, complete with vibrant decor, cozy furnishings, and a fresh selection of books. The space is designed to inspire a love for reading and learning in the youngest community members.
Libraries in underprivileged areas are essential pillars of community development and empowerment. They provide free access to books, internet, and educational resources that many residents otherwise could not afford, helping bridge gaps in literacy, digital access, and knowledge, playing a transformative role in lifting individuals and communities toward a brighter future.
“We had to help”
Boardwalk General Manager Tati Tsunke said: “When the library approached us, we knew we had to help as it is an important resource for the underprivileged communities it serves. Aside from being a safe place in which children can learn, adults also benefit from it.
“The internet connection will assist all members of the community to gain knowledge and stay up-to-date with news and, importantly, to look for employment as so many job opportunities are only offered online these days. They will also be able to use the new printer to print study materials, application forms and CVs to deliver to companies.”
The library’s newly equipped computer room, complemented by high-speed internet, will enable students to conduct research and complete school projects with greater ease. In an area where digital resources are often limited, this development ensures that more people can stay connected and take advantage of opportunities for learning and self-improvement.
In addition to the wifi, Boardwalk’s donation included a R20 000 collection of books for children and young teens. The expanded book selection ranges in audience from pre-school to Grade 7 learners, offering diverse content for children and young learners who will use the refreshed reading corner. With its bright, inviting atmosphere, the kids’ corner is set to become a favourite spot, encouraging young minds to explore the world of books and develop a passion for reading.
Collective effort
Boardwalk’s efforts were bolstered by several dedicated suppliers, including Liquid Intelligent Technologies (100 Mbps internet connection for 12 months), Ricoh (printer), OneEightySA (three wireless access points) and HiTech (installation of LAN cabling for the access points).
New Brighton Library has served the Ibhayi community since the 1960s, evolving from a traditional library to a safe haven during the tumultuous 1970s and 1980s. Today, it continues to be a vibrant community space where residents of all ages gather to learn, socialise, and share resources. This new digital upgrade marks an exciting chapter in the library’s history, bringing it further into the digital age and broadening the horizons for the community it serves.
Through this partnership, Boardwalk and its network of suppliers have demonstrated a powerful commitment to supporting community resources that foster growth, learning, and social development. With stable internet, new books, and improved facilities, New Brighton Library is poised to help bridge the digital divide and enrich the lives of local residents.
